Until now, Microsoft hadn’t disclosed the support cycle for Surface devices. As with any other Windows 10 laptop or PC, Surface receives UEFI, firmware, and driver updates for optimal performance after each operating system update. However, until now it was not known how long this support lasted.

In the world of Windows 10, the manufacturer’s lifecycle is usually not a determining factor, as most updates can be done from each component manufacturer’s website. Indeed, very few manufacturers disclose the life cycle of the product.

When my Surface will stop getting updates

Microsoft has unveiled end of support dates for Surface devices. It’s surprising, for example, that the Surface Pro 3 will receive firmware and driver updates until November 2021. This same date will mark the end of support for more modern devices like the Surface Studio or Surface Laptop.

As we can see, Microsoft has decided to adopt a cadence of four-year support cycle for the latest Surface devices. However, from Redmond they indicate that this period can be extended and that this change will be reflected before reaching the end date of support.

What happens when the device runs out of support

When Surface devices end their support cycle, it doesn’t mean the device is inoperable – far from it. Simply, Stop receiving UEFI, firmware and driver updates from Microsoft from Windows Update. Devices will continue to receive Windows 10 updates.

After support ends, if component manufacturers (such as Intel or AMD) continue to release driver updates, you will be able to download them from their website. The only difference is that these drivers are not optimized and it will be a little more difficult for the user to apply these updates.
