A Swiss pathologist examined the lungs of patients with deceased corona and was able to draw conclusions on various courses of the disease. The findings could improve the treatment of Covid-19.
In view of the rapidly growing number of infections, it becomes clear: any additional knowledge about the coronavirus is important. Swiss researchers have now found in autopsies that patients with Covid 19 die for two different reasons. The results were recently published in the English-language journal “Nature Communications”.
Current study: two groups of crown dead
Since the onset of the corona pandemic, Dr. Kirsten Mertz, pathology specialist at the cantonal hospital in Basel, and his team of people working at the COVID-19– the disease died. The researchers identified two groups from each other: those patients who die prematurely from a high viral load and those who later succumb to the damage caused by corona infection.
In an interview with the Swiss news portal “Blick”, Mertz explains: “The first group dies at an early stage from an enormously high viral load in the lungs. Unfortunately, the immune system is unable to suppress the virus.” The lung tissue of these deceased patients is said to have been largely intact.
“In the second group, however, it looks very different: the bodies of these patients can initially defeat the virus – but then enormous damage to the lungs and other organs can be seen,” says the pathologist. Such patients would die only after several days or weeks.
The body reacts too violently to the intruder. The virus can then shrink, but the inflammation destroys tissues and organs. “It’s like when the dentist pulls all your teeth because you have cavities. Then the cavities are gone, but so are your teeth,” compares the doctor.
Pathologist calls coronavirus a “killer”
When asked what a serious disease process depends on, Mertz replied in the “Blick” interview: “Safe from the dose”. The higher the viral load, the stronger the body’s immune response and more cells would be destroyed. Whether a person with corona infection has to fear a serious course is not just due to factors such as previous illnesses and age. The level of viral load you carry can also be decisive. Lessons for the treatment of Covid-19
The study’s pathological examinations could make important contributions to Covid-19 research and therapy. By dividing the coronal deaths into two groups, it would be easier to estimate which drug treatment could be used at which time.
Patients at the start of the course would be more likely to be treated with anti-inflammatory drugs and antiviral drugs. “Remdesivir, for example, the antiviral drug Donald Trump also received, will certainly have a better effect if given early enough,” Mertz points out.
The use of Remdesivir is permitted in Europe – the active substance, however, is highly controversial. In some patients it worked, in others no improvement could be seen. It has only recently become public that the World Health Organization (WHO) classifies remdesivir as ineffective against Covid-19.
