The Ethereum 2.0 beacon chain was launched today, initiating the first phase of the scaling update on the second largest blockchain in the world by market capitalization.
While the launch went as planned, there was one surprising element. On the first block, a message was written that no one understood at first. Rather than paying homage to Ethereum’s first launch, or aiming to bail out the banks, this message was a little more peculiar.
The message was: “Mr. F was here”.
Considering the syntax of the message, it has been conveniently written in the “graffiti” section of the block, where validators are able to write their own messages. This is similar to the part in Bitcoin blocks where miners can leave messages.
But what the hell does this message mean? And who is Mr. F?
At first, some thought this was a reference to the hit TV show Arrested Development, as it’s the name of the fifth episode of the third season. In the show, no one knows who Mr. F is, until it turns out to be an inappropriate acronym.
But it turns out that the origins of this Mr. F are quite different.
According to screenshots of a conversation on Discord, a pseudonymous entity known as Mr Fahrenheit was given the honor of creating the first Ethereum 2.0 block. How Trustnodes reported before launch, wrote: “does that mean I’m in block 0 or 1?”
Mr Fahrenheit … yes, his name is a reference Queen: is a decentralized app developer (dapp) who was a veteran in the Ethereum ecosystem before delving into the Tron blockchain. In January 2019, he headed the “Tron Shrimp team”, which created a dapp called Tron Shrimp Farm, on the Tron blockchain. It was popular for a short time, reaching 31,671 users in one day, but is no longer active.
Second Trustnodes, Mr. Fahrenheit then asked what he should have written in the first block of Ethereum 2.0. “What if I denounced bitcoin and compared it to the typewriter,” he suggested.
But evidently he made his decision and, after the launch of the Beacon Chain, it was the turn of the official cat herder of the Ethereum Foundation, Hudson Jameson, to clear up the mystery. He asked Fahrenheit on Discord if the graffiti on the block was a reference to Arrested Development.
“No,” he replied, “[it’s] just short for Mr Fahrenheit as in the Queen’s song, or if you’re watching mine [Vitalik Buterin] autograph is instead the abbreviation for “Mr Farenheit”. “
Mr Fahrenheit has therefore published an image of the signature in question. It simply addresses Mr. Farenheit (sic) and is signed by Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin.
And with that mystery solved, next is what happened to the silver monolith in Utah.
