The funeral procession that will transport the remains of Diego Armando Maradona to a cemetery on the outskirts of Buenos Aires started its march at 17.50 local time (20.50 GMT) this Thursday 26-N, in the middle of a Buenos Aires upset by the incidents between fans of the former footballer and police.

The car carrying the body of the greatest champion of Argentine football left from Casa Rosada, headquarters of the Executive, where the vigil was held.

The final destination is the private cemetery Jardin Bella Vista, about 40 kilometers from the Argentine capital.

There rest the remains of his parents, Diego Maradona and Dalma Salvadora Franco, popularly known as “Don Diego” and “Doña Tota”, who died in 2015 and 2011 respectively.

The Argentine Presidency has informed that the funeral procession will travel along Avenida 9 de Julio, the main artery of Buenos Aires, to the 25 de Mayo highway and then to the west access.

The authorities have disclosed the path that the procession will take so that those who went to greet the “Argentine idol” and failed to access the burning chapel give the “last farewell” from the streets.

The departure of the procession was, in fact, very complex, due to the deluge of people crowded at the gates of Casa Rosada and who were unable to go into vigil.

The burning chapel set up in one of the main rooms of the Casa Rosada had been open to the public at 06:00 local time (09:00 GMT) and Maradona’s family wanted the doors closed at 16:00 local time (19: 00h). 00 GMT).

But before the flood of people around the Government Palace, the family agreed to keep it open until 19:00 local time (22:00 GMT).

However, the serious incidents that occurred in the surroundings of the Executive headquarters and inside the Casa Rosada itself between the Maradona fans and the police forced the burning chapel to be closed in advance and the body of the former football player transferred to a room adjacent for security reasons.

Government explanation

After the incidents, the Argentine presidency issued a statement in which it assured that the government’s goal has always been that Diego could be “fired peacefully, knowing that the whole country and much of the world is shocked by his death”.

He explained that it was Maradona’s family who chose to hold the vigil at Casa Rosada, “a decision that the government accompanied”.

According to the Executive, “hundreds of thousands of Argentines” made a line of tens of blocks this Thursday to greet Diego Armando Maradona “and the farewell began very early this morning in a” very exciting and organized “way.

The statement notes that “as completion time approached, several people who were in line started jumping over the bars to enter irregularly.”

“Faced with this situation, the hospitalization was suspended for a few minutes. When some people were rehabilitated, they entered quickly, without following the instructions of the staff in charge”, reads the official note.

For this reason, the Casa Militare, which deals with presidential security, has activated an exit conduit through the Patio de las Palmeras and the esplanade leading to the Casa Rosada, where the fans remained for a few minutes with songs.

“Once the situation was peacefully controlled, the family expressed their desire and willingness to conclude the ceremony,” the statement read.
