The “Pinocchio” by Matteo Garrone and Roberto Benigni arrives in the United States with Roadside – Deadline

Roadside Attractions has acquired US theatrical release rights Pinocchio, the live-action of the classic story by Matteo Garrone and played by Roberto Benigni. The deal was reached with HanWay Films.

No release date set in the United States, but the film was released in December 2019 in its home country, Italy and other overseas territories, and has a worldwide gross of $ 20.31 million.

In the photo, Oscar-winning Benigni (who wrote, directed and starred Pinocchio is his film version of the story in 2002) now plays Geppetto, the wood carver whose puppet creation magically comes to life with the dream of becoming a real boy. Easily sidetracked, Pinocchio (Federico Ielapi) falls from one misadventure to another as he is tricked, kidnapped and chased by bandits through a wonderful world filled with imaginative creatures – from the belly of a giant fish to Toyland and the Field of Miracles.

Garrone (Dogman, Tale of Tales, Gomorra) wrote the screenplay with Massimo Ceccherini. Garrone also produced through his Archimede together with Jean and Ann-Laure Labadie of Le Pacte, Jeremy Thomas of the Recorded Picture Company and Paolo Del Brocco of Rai Cinema. Executive producers are Alessio Lazzareschi, Peter Watson and Marie-Gabrielle Stewart.

“Pinocchio is one of the most beloved short stories, loved by families all over the world,” Roadside co-presidents Howard Cohen and Eric d’Arbeloff said Thursday. “We were blown away by the otherworldly beauty and ingenious storytelling of Matteo’s film, and we’re thrilled to take audiences old and new on such a fresh, mischievous and thrilling adventure.”

The deal was negotiated by Cohen and Gabrielle Stewart of HanWay.

There are two other important tickets Pinocchio also the photos in the works: a stop-motion animated musical on Netflix by Guillermo del Toro and a live-action version at Disney with the direction and writing of Robert Zemeckis.
