Nikon cameras are among the most popular in the world, and the Japanese manufacturer has decided to offer all owners a completely new feature overnight.
Over the past year, a trend has emerged among camera / video manufacturers. Through various software applications, many digital SLR, mirrorless or compact point-and-shoot cameras have been transformed into video chat tools. In other words, if you have an Olympus camera, for example, you can use it as a webcam in your next Zoom session.
The latest company to join this “chorus” is Nikon, which recently decided to let you use its cameras in the form of a high-end webcam. The new functionality is activated through a software tool called the Webcam Utility Software. In other words, no camera firmware update or other complex process is required.
If you own a Canon, Sony, or Olympus camera, you already have access to this feature, as video conferencing has become increasingly common during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Returning to Webcam Utility Sofware, the program is available both for Windows 10, downloadable here, and for users of Apple systems with macOS, downloadable here. Unsurprisingly, beyond conferences, Nikon recommends using the DSLR camera for live streaming if you want to become a star on YouTube, Twitch, or another similar platform.
In theory, there is already a third-party software tool that unlocks this functionality, but the solution Nikon created is compatible with many more camera models in the Japanese giant’s portfolio. At the time of writing, the list includes Z 7II, Z 7, Z 6II, Z 6, Z 5, Z 50, D6, D5, D850, D810, D780, D750, D500, D7500, D7200, D5600, D5500, D5300 and D3500. The Japanese wanted to remind you that, from now on, the new application will be compatible with future Nikon camera models.
