The iconic Tower of Peace which was on the border between Canada and the United States came down in 2017 and, as regards the construction of a new tower, does not seem to be a priority for the council that runs the famous tourist resort south of Boissevain.
The Peace Tower was built in 1982 and was demolished due to structural problems.
Planning began for a newly designed tower that could address the challenges posed by local meteorological conditions. It's been two years but the project has not really taken off. Tim Chapman is CEO at the International Peace Garden and says he has other priorities before he can even think of moving forward with a new peace tower.
"You know the project is probably on number four on our list of priorities." We need to do some postponed maintenance work, upgrade staff accommodation and move on to expand our winter garden before tackling a new tower ".
Chapman says before building something new that they have to take of what they already have in the garden.
"When they launch not only to governments but to possible sponsors and private and corporate partners, they want to see that we can take care of what we have before we start building something new".
