A handful of employees who have worked at Vertu in the past created Xor. A spiritual successor to the luxury brand, Xor has just unveiled its first phone.
It’s been a few years since Vertu made a sensation in the global market for luxury terminals. Meanwhile, Apple and Samsung have begun launching phones worth thousands of euros, reducing the usefulness of a dedicated talking phone to those with deep pockets to zero. For reference, the latest Vertu was unveiled in October 2018. Entitled Aster, it was an Android gadget dedicated to the Chinese market.
Returning to Xor, the name appears to be pronounced Eggsor. The company is co-founded by Hutch Hutchinson, former director of design at Vertu, along with some of his former colleagues. As an interesting detail, it appears that some of the funding for the new company came from former Vertu customers who wanted the best user experience money could buy in a phone.
The first gadget in the company’s portfolio was supposed to be launched by the end of this year, but it looks like it will be postponed to the first quarter of 2021, due to the pandemic. Shown in the images below, this is a talking phone called the Xor Titanium. It will be hand assembled in England and will have a purchase price of £ 3,000 or around $ 4,000.
If it’s not evident from the title, the phone hides in a titanium case and uses a T9 keyboard for interaction. The back is leather and runs a proprietary operating system on the Linux kernel. The phone can only be used for voice calls and text messages, both. Even so, it’s commendable to include wireless charging and background noise cancellation for calls. Promises to last 5 days away from the outlet.
If you have the ability to interact with other people using an Xor, you will have the benefit of end-to-end encrypted calls via AES256. For more cautious users, all data on the phone can be wiped remotely.
