The new generation of Toyota Mirai also marks the official debut on the European market, and on this occasion the Japanese reveal comprehensive information on the technical substrate of the sedan with hydrogen propulsion system. In terms of design, the European version does not differ from the versions previously debuted for the North American market, but also the prototype unveiled at the beginning of the year.

So, with the new generation, Toyota Mirai has migrated to the global modular TNGA platform, more precisely to its TNGA-L version. With minor adjustments, depending on the final version, the platform is the basis of the latest models in the Japanese portfolio, from the Yaris urban compact to the Highlander SUV. With the change of generations Mirai enters a new segment, being larger in size, and this surplus has translated not only into a more generous space on board, but also in the possibility of installing an additional hydrogen tank, the third in number, which guarantees an extended range of about 30% compared to its predecessor, with a maximum range of 650 km.

In length the Mirai now measures 4,975 mm (+85 mm), with a wheelbase of 2,920 mm (+140 mm), while in height the sedan has been reduced by 65 mm to 1,470 mm. The Japanese revised the internal structure of the car, with hydrogen tanks positioned in the shape of the letter “T” on the floor of the car, a large central tank and two more compact tanks in the rear. Cumulatively, they can hold up to 5.6 kg of hydrogen (previously up to 4.6 kg). The changes allowed the engineers to achieve a lowered center of gravity, but also a perfect balance between the axes of 50:50.

The electric motor was also modified. It now develops a total of 174hp, 19hp more than before, and system-level improvements made it possible to use the car in extreme temperatures: Mirai will perform similarly even down to -30 degrees Celsius. Power has been increased by 12%, respectively, while the weight of the car has been reduced by approximately 50%, compared to the previous generation. The figures look very promising, but the Japanese have not revealed the dynamic characteristics at the moment.

Prices have not yet been specified, they will most likely be revealed by the time the new Mirai generation arrives in showrooms. Previously, the hydrogen electric car was launched in the United States and now, in addition to Europe, it is also available in Japan. With the new generation, Toyota plans to improve Mirai’s global sales by at least 10% and let’s say that after such metamorphoses, they have every chance of achieving this.
