The farewell was celebrated on a symbolic date: this year the Survivor Series takes place on November 22, the same day in 1990, when Mark Calaway – the athlete’s real name – scared the public for the first time with his appearance of ‘Dead Man’ in the then WWF.

The ceremony took place at the end of the event and was attended by many of the iconic “Dead Man” rivals, such as Kane, Triple H, Shawn Michaels, Big Show, Ric Flair or Booker T, as well as the head of WWE, Vince McMahon.

In his short speech, the fighter recalled how he has come out in the ring for the past 30 years. “The time has come for me to let the Undertaker rest in peace,” he concluded.

A historic race

Calaway began his professional career in 1987 when he joined World Class Championship Wrestling (WCCW), but in 1989 moved to World Championship Wrestling (WCW), where he performed under the name “Mean” Mark Callous . He only spent a year with that company before leaving, though it proved to have a big impact on his later career, as his departure came after executives told him that “no one would have paid to see him fight”. After leaving WCW in despair, Calaway joined WWE (at the time called WWF), where Vince McMahon, head of that company, proposed to embody the character ‘The Undertaker’, being the start of one of the most outstanding careers in la history of wrestling.

After his debut as The Undertaker in 1990, Calaway has always managed to be at the level of the wrestling elite, winning a series of titles in the company and keeping his character relevant and interesting to the public for three decades.
