The interface has no custom themes

Themes have played an important role in PS4 life over time, as a way to customize the console’s user interface.

Hundreds of themes are available for players to purchase or download for free, as well as the choice of songs from their favorite games, on the PS4 Hub. This is something that won’t happen with the PS5 interface, at least for now.

PS5, in our pre-launch experience, has no themes. IGN has reached out to Sony to investigate this decision, and the ability to customize the interface could happen in the future. As soon as we have confirmation, you will be the first to know! For now, there is at least one plausible reason not to have themes on the new console.

In general, the PS5 interface takes a reverse approach to that of PS4. Sony’s cutting-edge system showcased all of its icons at once and made them the highlight of the user interface. A series of games, applications and configuration icons are very often displayed simultaneously on the screen. What the PS5 interface does is move many of these assets up or in the Overlay Center pop-up on PS5.

Each game therefore has its own mini-theme. For example, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales showcases a large artwork of Miles in Spidey’s costume, while one of the game’s themes plays in the background. But if you move into Astro’s playroom, the new graphics take up the screen and the game music starts playing.

While it doesn’t allow the player to select a dynamic theme and customize its interface, it seems like every PS5 game offers a bit of specialization to the panel as you go through it. And since the PS5 Control Center will allow you to quickly switch games, check downloads and friends list (without closing the currently active game) it’s entirely possible that gamers will spend far less time on the PS5 panel – with PS4.

We will update this news as soon as Sony officially responds. Until then, you can find out a lot more about Sony’s new console, such as free storage, the first Dualsense test, and PS4 to PS5 data transfer.
