At the launch conference for the iPhone 12 line of terminals, Apple officials detailed a number of MagSafe accessories. Some of them have started selling and they are not what you expect.
When Apple announced MagSafe chargers for iPhones, they sounded pretty good, even though they represented a significant drawback in terms of charging speeds compared to similar solutions from Huawei, Samsung, Xiaomi, and others. You bought a MagSafe charger, you also paid for an 18W socket charger and had the opportunity to magnetically charge your iPhone 12 or 12 Pro phone at 15W.
Starting with this premise, you would have thought that any MagSafe certified charger, at least those from Apple, offers you 15W. This is not the case at all. Even the all-precious MagSafe Duo charger, pictured above, which costs $ 130 in the US, doesn’t offer 15W. Instead, it drops to 14W, according to official data posted on Apple’s website.
The difference between 14W and 15W seems like an imperceptible discrepancy in the real world, but it’s big enough to make Apple feel like they’ve stolen a little more from you, they’ve created another combination.
For reference, MagSafe Duo is a charger that promises to charge your phone and watch at the same time. The downside is that for up to $ 130, Apple sells it to you without a charger, just with a USB-C cable, and this is where the additional investment begins.
If you buy an 18W charger with USB C, which costs 200 lei in Romania, you will have a charging speed via MagSafe Duo of only 11W on your phone. To switch to 14W, however lower than the value specified for the simple MagSafe charger, you need a 30W USB-C charger, which Apple sells to you in Romania for 319 lei. From a simple calculation, it is clear that the MagSafe Duo is a bad deal, so bad that Apple doesn’t seem to want to buy it.
