The future of video games begins today. Microsoft’s new consoles – the more powerful Xbox Series X ($ 499) and the cheaper Xbox Series S ($ 299) – once again push the limits of what you can design and experience on the small screen, now and over the years. to come . However, at first glance, it seems little has changed. The menus are familiar, the controls are almost the same as on Xbox One, the graphics are better, but not by much.
None of this is unheard of. The difference between Xbox One and Xbox 360 video games was also not surprising when the previous Microsoft machine was launched, and over time the distinctions and improvements became apparent. Not only because programmers have begun to master hardware better, but also because they no longer have to create games that run on old systems. Eventually, the same thing will happen with this generation.
For now, however, the main change has to do with speed. Play (with multiple frames per second on the screen) and charging. Let’s focus on this last detail, as since the first PlayStation, and as games have become more complex, the loading times have never stopped increasing.
While three decades ago a single person had to turn on the console and start having fun, in recent years, between the moment you select the title you want to play and when you start playing, it has been two, three minutes. Or more. But on these consoles, which use fast SSDs and new decompression technologies, it takes seconds. Additionally, the Xbox Series X / S “Quick Resume” feature allows you to pause several games and, almost instantly, restart and switch between them.
Another of the strengths of the new Microsoft systems is their compatibility with previous versions. Almost all Xbox One titles, much of the Xbox 360 library, and many of the original Xbox classics work on new machines and in many cases perform better. The philosophy of the American company is that it doesn’t matter where you play (on which console, but also on your computer or streaming on mobile phones), as long as you buy the games from Microsoft’s online store or sign up for Xbox Game Pass for 9.99 € / month.
That’s why, to reach the greatest number of people, there’s an Xbox Series S. It’s a more limited, smaller and cheaper console, running exactly the same games as the Series X, but with a lower resolution (1440p, in instead of 4K) and worse visual effects, with slower processors. It also has less memory (just 364GB for games) and doesn’t have a blu-ray player, being digital only. However, the game catalog is the same.
There are already 30 games available, optimized for new hardware, including the long-awaited Assassin’s Creed Valhallaand that number will continue to increase. The next big launch, the November 13th is Call of Duty: Black Ops – Cold War. However, there is a lack of Halo Infinite, Microsoft’s largest asset, has been postponed to 2021.
In recent years, by the way, few Microsoft exclusive titles have filled the eyes. This situation is expected to change in the coming years. Americans recently bought several studios, including Arkane (Dishonored), a Bethesda (The Elder Scrolls), an id (Destiny) and the rest of the Zenimax Media group, and everything indicates that their exclusive catalog will grow and improve a lot. But it will still take some time.
