Although it will be a few days before it is delivered to Romania, Sony has launched the new PlayStation 5 and there are some details not to be missed.
A PS5 console, in theory, comes bundled with an 825GB SSD. From this seemingly generous space, the user has access to install games for just 667GB. The final value wouldn’t sound that scary if you don’t keep in mind that next-gen games aren’t small at all. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War takes up 133GB, Demons`s Souls jumps to 66GB, while Spider-Man: Miles Morales integrates into 50GB, unless you opt for the latest edition which takes up 105GB. For reference, the latter also includes the original Spider-Man Remastered, released for PS4.
These details are to be considered, because Sony has confirmed that, at least at launch, the new PlayStation 5 will not support the expansion of storage space through an upgrade to the SSD. In theory, this possibility should exist at some point, but we don’t have a clear promise about it.
The problem is to test compatibility with a significant variety of storage media, in order to ensure a flawless gaming experience. Sony insists that it uses the fastest SSDs ever created in the PS5 console, even if they aren’t very large. As a result, it would be a shame to have the opportunity to expand that space, but the console would suddenly become slower, at least for some games.
As a further argument for the fact that the PS5 will support an additional M.2-type SSD is the presence of an easily accessible slot inside, one that is empty. Unfortunately, that slot is disabled by Sony when the console starts up. It remains to be seen how long it will take to activate it, but it is definitely a detail not to be overlooked if you think you have a large library of games installed.
