The Gameweek 10 captain debate looks set to result in a drastic reshaping of the 10,000 best managers in the Fantasy Premier League.
That’s because there is no outstanding candidate for the armband this week, according to the analysis at LiveFPL.net.
Rather than one or two individuals breaking away from the pack of pursuers, there is an unprecedented five-way split of similarly backed captains, which is sure to create serious grade movement at this level.
As you can see, Jamie Vardy (£ 10.2m) was the top 10k favorite for the armband ahead of a favorable home match with the naive and courteous Fulham defense.
However, only 21.1% were happy to support the Leicester man, the rest perhaps influenced by the disparity between his form at home and away (only one of his 10 returns in attack came at King Power Stadium in this season) or perhaps enticed by the host of other options.
Mohamed SalahThe midweek appearance (£ 12.2 million), a first outing since returning from solitary confinement, convinced 16.1% of the top 10k that he can be trusted against Brighton.
Prior to his positive coronavirus (COVID-19) test, the Egyptian had returned in four of his previous five Premier League appearances.
But the recent double-digit tally from Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£ 7.8m), combined with Leeds’ recent beating, means a further 15.7% have chosen the Everton man as captain.
Meanwhile, 14.7% went with an away specialist Bruno Fernandes (£ 10.8 million), with double-digit drops on every journey this season and Harry Kane (£ 11.0m), despite facing Chelsea’s improved defense, still managed to attract 14.5% of the top 10k captains.
The impact of such a widespread degree of captaincy on effective ownership is also fascinating.
It means that no player can boast a figure in this department above 100% for Gameweek 10, Calvert-Lewin coming closest with 96.3%.
Again, the hard matches did not trigger a flash sale of Spurs assets in the top 10k, Kane and Son Heung-min (£ 9.5 million) sitting in the top three for actual ownership at this level.
What these figures mean is that Gameweek 10 is the perfect week to try something different, considering going against the so-called “crowd” carries far less risk than usual. Consequently, making such a decision carries a greater chance of bigger green arrows if successful.
It is particularly significant that no Manchester City player has appeared in the top five captains at this level, despite a favorable match-up with Burnley.
The Clarets have lost their last three away games to Etihad Stadium (in all competitions), each time by a score of 5-0.
Self Kevin De Bruyne (£ 11.6 million) benefits from the Saturday afternoon release, it will reward only a small number of captains in the top 10k.
Only 6.6% of them felt confident enough to give the Belgian their armband, while only 1.1% were captain Raheem Sterling (11.5 million pounds).
In fact, not a single Manchester City player still appears in the model at this level, despite Pep Guardiola’s men embarking on their attractive date this week of play.
After hosting Burnley, Manchester City will welcome Fulham, West Bromwich Albion and Newcastle at the Etihad Stadium between now and Gameweek 15, but only 19.5% of the top 10k is invested in De Bruyne, Citizens’ most popular player among them coaches.
Son, Fernandes remain the hippest premium options in midfield while Salah and Diogo Jota (£ 6.7 million) are the motors and agitators, in place Wilfried Zaha (£ 7.3 million) e James Rodriguez (£ 7.9 million) in the model.
Unsurprisingly, there have been far fewer fluctuations between defenders and forwards.
Calvert-Lewin overtook Kane as the most popular striker in the first 10k, now owned by 80% of them, while the Spurs man saw his support drop by a 10 percentage point margin.
Patrick Bamford (£ 6.1 million) holds third place meaning Vardy stays off the podium for ownership of the top 10k.
Meanwhile, the top five defenders remain unchanged, with minimal shifts in ownership of the top 10,000.
Only 23% of managers in this tier have so far gone without chips in the campaign, while 46.4% have fielded exactly one.
Interestingly, 2.3% of them have already run out of their entire supply.
Once again, the Wildcard was the most popular chip for the last Gameweek, although it was used sparingly compared to the rest of the top 10k.
With 2.9% for free throw, 3.7% pulled the trigger for new teams for Gameweek 10.
Interestingly, those who play Wildcard at this level have largely relied on templates for the overall selection image, as you can see a large number of overlays.
Despite the toughest fights, Son and Kane are still very much present in these teams, as are Salah and Jota while João Cancelo (£ 5.5 million) and Vardy are the big exceptions to the main model.
