Destiny 2 servers will be shut down tonight for maintenance ahead of the launch of the Beyond Light expansion tomorrow, but just before doing so, Bungie decides to invite players for a pleasant and relaxing stroll through the game’s impressive last city.

Players had been expecting some sort of live game event to wrap up the game’s final season for some time, but no one knew exactly what form it would take. After an erroneous email from Bungie to players who left the cat out of the bag late last week, Destiny 2 director Luke Smith officially announced on Twitter that there would be a “small event” to close the season. . current game arrivals. “It’s nothing too crazy, just a little time to relax in the Tower before the lights go out,” Smith wrote.

While the event started around 7 p.m. ET with new weird streaks of light appearing around the Traveler as seen from the Tower, it was only later in the hour that a real mission appeared on the Destiny launcher that allows players to to investigate. a riot in the last city. Destiny 2 servers are clearly dealing with a lot right now, and some people haven’t been able to load the mission. Those who have now can land on the city streets and explore at their leisure. I’m here now and I’m not sure I ever want to leave.

Ever since the first Destiny came out in 2014, players have longed for the chance to go to Last City and see it up close and in person, rather than being stuck looking at the top of the Tower from afar. Players spend dozens, if not hundreds of hours, protecting humanity’s last settlement from countless alien threats, but never get a chance to visit and see who or what they are working so hard to defend. Tonight the players finally got this chance. There have been multiplayer PVP maps there and other pseudo visits, but nothing that shows the extent of Destiny 2’s dazzling art and world-building on display in this way.

The Last City rarely associates with people, but some have gone out to observe the Traveler emitting mysterious pulses of light. The environment created by Bungie is anything but a simple linear corridor, albeit with few NPCs standing. There are open shops to hang out in, alleyways to hide in, and a surprising number of nooks, crannies and other dead ends to get lost in. Finally, the mission leads to a rusted walkway that connects a river with a gate on the other side. By pressing the button to enter from the other side, you immediately meet other players on the roof of one of the skyscrapers of Last City with a perfect view of what is about to happen to the Traveler.

It’s unclear what the rest of tonight’s live event will include. The first one Bungie tried over the summer involved a giant spaceship that exploded and crashed into mountains. Tonight’s season finale may not be as explosive, but being able to finally see the Last City as it was meant to be will make it just as memorable, if not more so. Hopefully, this won’t be the last time players will be able to visit it. The event will conclude at 10pm ET.
