According to data from the Ministry of Health, the state of São Paulo has the second highest incidence of the disease with 206 thousand cases; in the region, Ribeirão Preto accumulates more than 18 thousand cases

Measures to prevent and combat the dengue-transmitting mosquito require extra attention due to the Covid-19 pandemic scenario, as the risk of a new epidemic can aggravate transmission of the new coronavirus.

According to data released in the October edition of the Epidemiological Bulletin of the Secretariat for Health Surveillance, an organ of the Ministry of Health, as of September the state of São Paulo had the second highest incidence rate of dengue with 206,779 cases, second only to the state of Paraná, which recorded 262,664 cases of the disease.

In cities of up to 500,000 inhabitants, the highlight in the state of São Paulo is Catanduva, which has recorded 7,611 cases of the disease up to 21 September this year. In municipalities with up to 1 million inhabitants, Ribeirão Preto appears in second place in the national ranking with 18,088 cases in the period. Another city in Sao Paulo with a high rate of dengue is Campinas, which in the national group of cities with more than 1 million inhabitants, occupies the fifth position with 4,110 cases this year.

According to infectious disease doctor Sílvia Fonseca, regional director of infectious diseases at the Hapvida System, which runs the São Francisco Group, measures are needed to prevent and combat the transmitting mosquito to prevent an epidemic of the disease, which is likely to occur. in any location.

“The risk of having a dengue epidemic always exists in Brazil. We have four different serotypes of dengue virus and we have the transmitting mosquito in all Brazilian cities ”, underlines the infectologist.

He says that a possible dengue epidemic scenario can aggravate the cases of contamination in Covid-19, as it would facilitate its transmission, mainly through crowding in hospitals.

“If we have the two epidemics together (dengue and Covid-19), there will be a large conglomeration of people in emergency, which can also facilitate the transmission of Covid-19 to those who are there because of dengue,” says Sílvia.

The infectious disease doctor also notes that some symptoms are similar between the two diseases, but that, unlike dengue, cases of Covid-19 development are accompanied by respiratory symptoms.

“The symptoms are very similar to fever, headache, body pain, but the big difference is that Covid-19 also has respiratory symptoms like runny nose and cough, which is not the case with dengue. It is important to note that both diseases can progress to death, so early diagnosis and treatment can help avoid overloaded wards and severe cases, ”concludes Silvia.
