LONDON (Reuters) – His daughters-in-law Kate and Meghan are regularly praised for their fashion sense, but 71-year-old Prince Charles, known for patching and mending his clothes, has likely been considered a British style icon – up to now.
“I’ve always admired the way you dress,” he told British Vogue Editor-in-Chief Charles Edward Enninful in an interview for the latest edition of the fashion magazine.
The praise for his timeless sense of dress seemed to take the heir to the throne by surprise, who usually prefers double-breasted suits accompanied by a tie and matching handkerchief.
“I thought I was like a stopped watch … people come back after 25 years to dress like me,” he said with a laugh. “I’m very glad you think he has style. I’m interested in details, colors and things like that. “
Male members of the British royal family usually take a back seat to females when it comes to fashion coverage.
Kate, wife of Charles’s eldest son, Prince William, has already appeared on the cover of Vogue while Meghan, wife of William’s younger brother, Harry, edited the magazine.
Charles, who has long campaigned on environmental issues, was interviewed for Vogue about his commitment to sustainable fashion, something he said he always cared about.
“I’m one of those people who hate throwing anything away. So, I prefer that they are kept, even patched up if necessary, rather than abandoning them, “he said, urging producers and consumers to be less wasteful.
He added: “But it seems to me that there are tremendous opportunities, particularly now, within the entire sustainable fashion industry, to counter this extraordinary disposable clothing trend – or, frankly, use it all.”
