The PlayStation 5 has the largest bay Sony has ever installed on a PlayStation, yet it could have been even bigger if it were for head designer Yujin Morisawa. Morisawa wanted to make sure that the case allowed enough air circulation for the powerful hardware. That’s why he designed a particularly large case.
The case was too big then, Morisawa says in an interview with the Washington Post:
“At first I didn’t know what to expect. I knew it would be bigger [als frühere Konsolen, Anm. d. Red.]because I knew how much power [die PS5 ] and I knew how much air circulation and how much space for a heatsink we would need. At the beginning […] it was much bigger, even though I didn’t know what the engineers would do. It’s kind of funny that the engineers told me it was too big. So I had to cut it down a little […]. “
Morisawa believes the console is now the perfect size. A tighter case obstructs airflow and disturbs the user while gaming. When designing the console, it was always about maximizing the space inside, but at the same time going beyond anything that used to be in terms of the PlayStation.
The Easter eggs in the design go beyond the controller texture
At the same time, the designers wanted to hide the smaller Easter eggs in the console design. This includes the texture on the underside of the DualSense controller, which on the one hand is meant to improve haptic feedback, but on the other hand serves as a hidden bonus with PlayStation symbols. Morisawa describes his intention behind this texture with the fact that it should represent the user’s “energy and emotion”:
“Imagine a collection of microorganisms gathering together to create a larger design. I meant that the energy, power and emotion of the players accumulate to create that shape.”
Incidentally, the designer also indicates in the interview that he and his team hid other similar Easter eggs on the console and controller housing. So we can be curious to see what details will emerge after the console’s release on November 19, 2020.
