The Chinese Chang’e-5 probe it was deployed from the lunar orbit for a controlled landing and to carry out the first collection of samples of an extraterrestrial body in the Asian country.
The spacecraft’s lander and climb combination separated from its orbiter-return combination at 20:40 UTC on November 29th, according to the China National Space Administration (CNSA), quoted by Xinhua.
Launched on November 24, Chang’e-5 is one of the most complicated and challenging missions in China’s aerospace history, as is the world’s first lunar sampling mission in more than 40 years, after the Apollo program and the Soviet Luna 24 probe in 1976.
The spacecraft works fine and communication with ground control is normalCNSA said.
The lander and climb combination will perform a soft moon landing and auto sampling. The orbiter-returner will continue to orbit approximately 200 kilometers above the lunar surface and will await meeting and mating with the ascendant to return to Earth. The duration of the mission is scheduled for 23 days.
