After the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League, whose 2020-21 season kicks off on November 27, announced cases of covid-19 in several teams, National Assembly medical advisor Julio Castro warned that it is a sample of what happens in the country, where the virus multiplies without any prevention.

Positive PCR cases of covid-19 in professional baseball league teams are an expression of what happens in communities. There is transmission in asymptomatic patients and the trend seems to be increasing, ”the specialist said on Twitter.

2020-21 season

This Friday, November 27, the 2020-21 season of Venezuelan professional baseball will begin, announced the president of the organization, Giuseppe Palmisano.

That day the match between Cardenales de Lara and Águilas del Zulia will start in Barquisimeto, and the next day the action for the rest of the teams will begin.

Palmisano explained that it will be played in two groups: Western and Eastern. In the first there will be Cardenales de Lara, Águilas del Zulia, Navegantes del Magallanes and Tigres de Aragua. In the other, Leones del Caracas, Tiburones de La Guaira, Caribes de Anzoátegui and Bravos de Margarita.

Additionally, he indicated that baseball will be played in four bubble venues. Valencia will be the scene of the matches between Magallanes and Bravos, Maracay de Tigres and Caribes, Barquisimeto de Cardenales y Águilas and Caracas de Leones y Tiburones.

Palmisano reported that during the tournament the bio-sanitary regulations will be respected to avoid the contagion of covid-19.

Coronavirus in Venezuela

Venezuela has been in national quarantine since mid-March and since June, the regime of Nicolás Maduro, which said preventive measures must be strengthened, has implemented a seven-day prison system with seven days of flexibility. However, this system will expire on Sunday, November 29, as the ruling party recently announced that it will be revoked throughout December.

As of this Wednesday, official data showed 100,817 infections and 880 coronavirus deaths in the country. But the opposition and medical specialists say the death toll could more than double due to the underestimation of cases.
