Children between the ages of 1 and 5 have until tomorrow (30) to receive the polio vaccine, the closing day of the National Polio Vaccination Campaign. According to the latest budget of the Ministry of Health (MS), released on the 26th, only 35% of the relevant public were vaccinated, which corresponds to 4 million children in this age group.
Therefore, 7.3 million children still need to be vaccinated to achieve the goal of immunizing 11.5 million recipients. The campaign started on 5 October and runs at the same time as the multivaccination campaign, which aims to update the vaccination situation of children and adolescents under 15 years of age.
According to the report published on the 26th, the highest vaccination coverage occurred in Amapá, with 62.59% coverage, followed by Paraíba, with 50.11%. The lowest coverage is in Rondônia, with 11.76%. In a note, the ministry reported that, according to preliminary data, 232 municipalities (4.16%) have so far reached the target of 95% vaccinated children.
“Among the target population for vaccination, the highest coverage, so far, was recorded among 2-year-olds (35.33%) and the lowest coverage was among 3-year-olds (34.23%) . There is no treatment for polio and the only form of prevention is vaccination. The oral polio vaccine (VOP) protects against two poliovirus serotypes (1 and 3) and the inactivated vaccine (VIP), against the three serotypes (1, 2 and 3) ”, the Ministry of Health informed in a statement.
Also according to the chart, it is recommended that children with acute infections, with fever above 38ºC or with hypersensitivity to any component of the vaccine, are evaluated by the health service before taking the vaccine. The ministry, however, guarantees that the vaccine “is extremely safe and has an efficacy between 90% and 95% for PWV”. The recommendation to States that do not reach the goal is to continue with routine vaccination, offered throughout the year in over 40 thousand health centers distributed throughout the country.
