Rasenballsport Leipzig suffered a bitter defeat in the Champions League group stage on Matchday 2. At Manchester United, coach Julian Nagelsmann’s side lost 5-0. The Saxons were sometimes the better team, but were unpleasantly thwarted several times in the final round.

At the same time, the BVB celebrated a narrow victory against Zenit St. Petersburg. You can find all about the top three in the current Champions League season for Dortmund Here.

That’s how the Leipzig game went

Mason Greenwood (21st minute), the youngest player on the pitch aged 19, shot the “Red Devils” in front of the ghostly crowd at Old Trafford before Rashford with a triple (73./78./ 90. + 2) and Anthony Martial with a penalty (87.) made the first home win of the season perfect. Before that, there was a 1: 3 against Crystal Palace in the Premiere League, a disastrous 1: 6 against Tottenham Hotspur and a 0: 0 against Chelsea.

Nagelsmann initially left Marcel Sabitzer and Tyler Adams, recently slightly ill, on the bench. In the last three of the central defense, the French Ibrahima Konaté was preferred to Willi Orban. Man United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer surprised with Donny van de Beek in midfield and surprisingly left Rashford and Fernandes in the starting lineup. For this he bet on Greenwood, which paid immediately.

RB tried hard, but without success

The striker ran away from Dayot Upamecano on the left half after a suspicious pass from Pogba and passed RB goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi to take the lead (21st). Despite a double check by the video referees, the shot was not retracted. For the Saxons it was a wake-up call: first Christopher Nkunku (21st) tested United goalkeeper David de Gea, then Kevin Kampl (24th) got stuck with his defensive shot. RB tried hard, but failed to set playful accents against running hosts.

After the change, RB picked up the pace, played balls more directly and therefore had more freedom to change situations. Most of the time, however, it was the end of the line in the penalty area. Man United remained enormously present in duels and played more precisely on the offensive. After a good hour Nagelsmann led first the captain Sabitzer, then the Norwegian Alexander Soerloth – Solskjaer parallel to Rashford.

RB’s equalizer prevented de Gea in the 65th minute with a brilliant save after Konaté’s header from close range. On the other hand, Gulacsi (71.) was perfect after a set piece against Anthony Martial who entered the field. Then the show of replacement Rashford began, which became three times colder than ice.
