Fall’s trendiest ingredient is also a hit in skin care, thanks to its diverse nutrient profile. “Topically, pumpkin is packed with benefits,” says Ava Shamban, MD, a California-certified cosmetic dermatologist. Contains vitamins A, C and E that moisturize, firm and protect the skin; anti-inflammatory compounds that soothe; and enzymes that gently exfoliate. “When you’re cooking for the holidays, it’s easy to prepare what you need for even a great DIY mask,” says Dr. Shamban. Her favorite recipe is good for a week when stored in the refrigerator (but don’t accidentally eat it!).

How to make a pumpkin face mask

ingredients

  • 2 cups pureed or canned pumpkin
  • 4 tablespoons of plain, unflavored yogurt (contains lactic acid, a gentle exfoliant)
  • 1/3 cup finely chopped almonds (rich in antioxidants, also helps exfoliation)
  • 4 tablespoons of honey (an excellent antibacterial)
  • 1/4 teaspoon of olive oil (moisturizing and rich in vitamins)

        Indications

        1. In a medium bowl, mix all the ingredients until fully incorporated.
        2. Apply to clean skin and leave for 5-10 minutes while taking a bath or shower. (“Enzymes are most active when they are moist,” says Dr. Shamban.)
        3. Remove with a clean microfiber cloth and follow with your favorite moisturizer.
