Nuno Santos arrived at Sporting in the summer and has already hired himself as a key player in Rúben Amorim’s side, recognizing that he is an important player. Despite the cautious speech, from game to game, consider the end of the 25 years that the group, full of quality, has the maturity to take on the position of candidate for the title.
He arrived at Sporting in the summer. What surprised you the most about the club? Did it exceed your expectations?
– Passed, in all respects. It’s a great club, a great Portuguese club. In all respects. I’m really happy, coming to Sporting was a step forward.
At the time there was talk of a proposal from FC Porto. Really exists?
– I’ll just say there was that interest. But I’m at Sporting, with my head here, this is my club and this is where I want to be.
What made you choose Sporting? At the time of the presentation he said it was his choice.
– I chose it because it was the project I saw and that could have had more opportunities, a club that is a great challenge, both for me and for all the other players who came. We are proving it and that is why I decided to come to Sporting.
Sport is the leader. Do you feel comfortable in that place or is there a little extra pressure here?
– No. We as Sporting, as Sporting players, cannot be under pressure to be in first place. Sporting is a great club, a club that must be used to being up there and we have already thought about it. We play match by match, the championship is too long. Right now we are in first place but focused, always with humility and continuing our work. Match by match we will reach the goal, just as we have achieved it. We have six wins and one draw. We are doing well and must continue.
João Mário indicated the Champions League. Is this the strategy, aiming for the Champions League? Is it also a way to protect younger players?
– If we talk about Champions, we will have to be in first or second place for direct entry. Or third. But Sporting has to fight to always be up there and we, as players, always have the dream of being in European competitions, both in the Europa League and, of course, higher in the Champions League. Everyone wants to be there, but if things don’t go well we won’t be there. It is giving continuity, game after game, to this group union. We have a fantastic group, very close and with a great desire to win every game.
