THE BALL – 9 days of PlayStation 5 testing: you know what to expect (Games)

[ad_1]

It was months and months of reading on PlayStation 5. First it was rumored that Sony was studying the development of a new console, then there was talk of release dates, technical specifications, etc. The expectation was growing, mostly thanks to the promises of progress players have always asked for, such as backward compatibility. Until the day came …

In Portugal, Sony’s next generation consoles are on sale today – good luck to all who are embarking on the adventure of getting one now! – and here at BOLA we can finally show the fruit of 9 days of using Sony’s next-generation console.

I know the reader wants to know what to expect from the PlayStation 5, but, I admit, this text differs somewhat from the journalistic tradition of putting the news first. And for a reason: because technological advancement such as the launch of a next-generation console is more than just pressing a button and playing. There is all the waiting, the expectations, the doubts …

When the house bell rang on the 10th and a young delivery boy handed me a box 48cm long, 45cm high and 19cm thick, I guess he had no idea what was going to pass through my hands. But I knew it and in that moment I felt the future touch me.

Since the first PlayStation which, although it launched in 1994, I only bought it in 1998, I have had some of the best moments of relaxation playing on each of the Sony consoles (and others, as before, on PC, on a Commodore Amiga and on the old ZX Spectrum). So, after everything I knew about PS5 even before I got it in my hands, I confess that moment had something solemn. So only, instead of opening the box and getting everything working, I decided to have lunch first and then calmly embark on the mission that would consume me the rest of the day – I already knew that. I won’t be the only one, but there is something about postponing pleasure that makes it more special …

When the shipping box was opened, inside was another one of identical size, white – like the PlayStation – covered with a sliding strip that revealed the real box only after removing it. And here is the first magical moment: with the movement of our eyes, or the overturning of the box, a powerful message is revealed under the logo of the triangle, the ball, the X and the square: “The game has no limits” that in games not even imagination is a limit, because there is always something new that emerges.

When unboxing, a fascinating simplicity: a first box with cables, control and support base. Under the PlayStation 5. Giant, white, asking to jump directly to the TV cabinet. Of course I did as I please.

The console assembly process is quite simple and quick, especially for those who already have experience with previous models. I chose to leave it lying down, for practical reasons, and the installation guide immediately made it clear to me where to place the support that allows you to hold the right ‘spaceship’.

Then came the desired time to turn it on. Everything like before? USB cable (supplied in the package) connected to the DualSense controller, press the PS button and “voilá”. The light is made. Literally. On the screen and on the console. A white light, which matches the futuristic air.

The PlayStation 5 setup process is simple and intuitive. Just follow the instructions on the screen, enter the required data. A nice surprise was the ability to automatically import data from PlayStation 4, simply by turning it on and waiting for the transfer: the option is given to copy only the account, account and saved data, or even install the games that are saved on PS4. Remarkable!

In the meantime, a few minutes have passed and something begins to show itself. Or rather, in the ears. The noise that the new PlayStation 5 makes. Or rather, the noise that the new PlayStation 5 does not make! It’s amazing how a ventilation monster like this, full of ventilation, can be so quiet. And by silence I mean … silent. Having the PlayStation 5 turned on produces as much operating noise as it does when it is turned off.

During the configuration process it is also possible to define which applications we want to install (highlighting the main streaming services, including the new Disney + service), which makes PlayStation 5 an even more effective entertainment center, maintaining the logic already adopted on PS4.

Something reinforced in the version we were given for testing, as it includes a Blu-Ray player, excellent for watching Blu-Ray and DVD movies, but also for playing physical copies of PS4 and PS5 games – I tried to introduce a copy of PS3 but, as already known, backward compatibility is guaranteed only for the previous generation.

Come on, before an army of offended people come to comment that the ‘intern’ is stupid and that it is evident that PlayStation 5 was made to play, let’s assume that the subtitle above is a joke and that it is based on all the potential of entertainment on PlayStation 5. And gaming, my friends, is all we ever want to do with the new PS5 …

With Astro’s Playroom pre-installed, this will likely be most players’ first contact with PlayStation 5. After all, the game is a kind of business card and at the same time a demonstration of the capabilities of the new DualSense, which we have already written about. (You can see it here).

Comfortable to the touch, ergonomic, the new controller is a happy evolution of the Dual Shock. And something that will set the standard in the future.

Almost without realizing it, everything becomes fluid to play. Load times that have previously led to despair have been drastically reduced thanks to the introduction of an ultra-fast SSD. And here we are faced with yet another promise kept by Sony.

One by one, I was installing titles like Sack Boy: a great adventure, Miles Morales, Call Of Duty Black Ops Cold War, Demons Soul, Devil May Cry 5, Assassins Creed Valhalla. In the meantime I have tried FIFA 21, PES 21 and others from my previous library. And with each experience he became more and more fascinated.

I have never felt a great need for graphic evolution in relation to PlayStation 4 games, I confess, but I know that PlayStation 5 allows you to go further, whether in the shadows, in the lights or even in the details – I also know this because I don’t have a 4K TV, I can’t take a complete departure from the ‘monster’ qualities, but, I confess, in Full HD I’m more than satisfied with what my eyes testify.

Points for me, for avoiding in the subtitle above talking about a seated festival, as the risk of spending most of our free time in front of the TV playing PlayStation 5 is real. The truth is that Sony’s new console is a true feast for the senses.

For a start, look. Not only because of its unique design – which is odd at first, but when at home it looks really good on my white TV – but also because of its graphics processing ability.

Also sound. Yes, because games live a lot on sound. And on PlayStation 5 it comes with refinement, and also – as on 4 – with unique details that come directly from the DualSense controller (you can disable them). The remote also has a microphone and a jack output for connecting headphones with the cable. Precious for those who cannot (or do not want to) buy one of the official Bluetooth headsets.

Tactile. The feeling of taking DualSense is natural, everything fits perfectly in the hands (in mine, at least), and it is through these that we go even deeper into the games. In Call of Duty Cold War, for example, the vibration of the DualSense corresponds to the rate of fire of the various weapons; in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla it is possible to feel the tension of the string as it stretches before firing an arrow with R2.

VERDICT

After 9 days, there is a certainty that I want to share: PlayStation 5 is really worth it because it represents a real evolution in the world of gaming. In addition to all the quality it promises – and satisfies – add to this the fact that for the first time a new Sony console does not kill the previous one. The ability to install previously purchased PS4 titles allows you to follow the path of the future without leaving the past in order in a drawer.
