Fluoxetine’s job is to inhibit the absorption of serotonin, but it could also play a crucial role in the treatment of corona patients, experts say. A COVID-19 disease is triggered by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. According to the team, fluoxetine inhibits both the uptake of SARS-CoV-2 viruses in cell culture and their spread without harming cells or tissues.
“Research on licensed drugs already in use could lead to the use of many active ingredients as antivirals as well,” explains Ursula Rescher, WWU research director. COVID-19 patients would also benefit from this through multiple treatment options. The work was funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft under the special research areas 1009 “Breaking Barriers” and 1348 “Dynamic Cellular Interfaces”.
