Former bodybuilder Dave Prowse, who rose to fame after playing Darth Vader in the original Star Wars trilogy, has died at the age of 85, writes the BBC.
“May the Force be with him forever!” Said his agent, Thomas Bowington, who announced his death without giving details.
Dave Prowse was cast for the role of Vader because of his massive physique: the athlete was a 1.98m tall bodybuilder.
Director George Lucas noticed him in 1971 in the film Mechanical Orange, where Prowse played a bodyguard, and called him to audition for the roles of Darth Vader and Chewbacca in the first 1977 Star Wars trilogy: Episode IV – A New The hope.
Later, Prowse stated in an interview that he chose Vader over Chewbacca for “you always remember the bad guys”.
His British accent – Dave Prowse was a Bristol Brit – did not fit the character, so Vader’s voice was voiced by actor James Earl Jones.
He has also appeared in James Bond – Casino Royale, Doctor Who and other film productions.
However, the actor turned athlete was very proud of his role as Green Cross Code Man, a superhero created in the 1970s, in a campaign to raise awareness of road hazards for pedestrians in the UK.
