The UK was the first Western country to authorize a coronavirus vaccine within the week and the first vaccinations are expected to take place as early as next week. Faced with this imminent arrival of a vaccine, the French government presented its vaccination strategy for the coming months on Thursday 3 December.

Jean Castex explained it the vaccination will start in a few weeks and will be free for everyone. The French won’t have to pay anything to get vaccinated. The cost of this vaccination, 1.5 million euros for 2021, was taken into account in the social security budget.

No risk of shortage: 200 million doses ordered will vaccinate 100 million people as two injections are needed far beyond what is needed. But the government preferred to anticipate delivery problems or authorization problems for some vaccines.

Vaccinations will be carried out in three stages, as recommended by the High Health Authority. We will vaccinate first in EHPAD residents and staff with chronic or elderly illnesses over 65 years. This will concern over a million people in January, which will correspond to the amount of vaccines that will arrive in the first month. Obviously, the families of the residents will be consulted.

Second phase from February: vaccination will be extended to all those who are weakened by age, over 65, and from pathologiesit’s at over 50 nursing staff : staff of hospitals, private nurses and general practitioners, for example: this represents 14 million French people.

Finally, in spring the entire population will be invited to be vaccinated and a medical follow up will be in place for everyone for several months to ensure that all is well.
