With 17 years of presence in Mexico with insurance for international medical expenses, this year Bupa is committed to its growth in the country with the arrival of new national products.
A few weeks ago the insurer announced an investment of 220 million pesos to expand its insurance offer, as well as its digital infrastructure where telemedicine and telepsychology are increasingly in demand by its users due to the pandemic.
“We have a three-year plan with an investment of 220 million pesos in 2020 to improve our products, launch new ones, create a digital platform; the pandemic has come to make people aware of the need to take care of themselves and prevent “, said Luk Vanderstede, general manager Bupa México.
In a virtual interview with The Economist, the executive indicated that even before the pandemic they were already working in other parts of the world with the implementation of products closer to their policyholders in order to break with the business model of traditional insurance for higher medical expenses.
“In recent years we have seen an increase in demand in the market, by the end of 2019 we have already reached 60,000 lives covered, this accompanied by an important investment that will be seen especially in 2021”, he said.
Digital products
The CEO of Bupa México announced that in recent months they have launched two new products with national coverage, the first is medical insurance: Bupa Nacional Plus and the second is: Essential Free Choice.
Luk Vanderstede explained that Bupa Nacional Plus is a policy for higher medical expenses that has the particularity that distinguishes them, its policyholders can be assisted when they request it in the Hospital and with the doctor who seems best to them, that is, it is not a requirement to attend a closed network or to move within an established catalog of doctors.
This insurance also offers online medical advice services to speed up the response with telemedicine that offers access to medical and psychological consultations 24 hours a day, 7 days a week without leaving home and, in the case of maternity, personalized accompaniment during pregnancy.
The other product, Essential Free Choice, offers primary care medical consultations with specialists (maximum eight per year and with a reimbursement of 900 pesos each), unlimited medical and psychological teleconsultation, as well as rehabilitation, physiotherapy, laboratory studies, with a approximate annual payment of 11,149 pesos per year.
It should be noted that in both products the age for taking is from zero to 74 years and 11 months.
“The insurance market is changing and there is Bupa’s response with our new products, we are adapting to the new normal by giving our customers insurance without having to leave home and continuing to take care of themselves in the place where they are found thanks to products such as telemedicine ”.
COVID-19
The Bupa executive commented that as an insurer they have also faced the aftermath of the pandemic where up to now 53 of their clients have tested positive for COVID-19 and most have recovered.
“To date, Bupa Mexico has paid 67 million pesos in terms of hospitalizations for these cases that have tested positive,” he says.
Finally, he stresses that given the situation since the beginning of the health emergency, they took the initiative with the use of telemedicine. “We were the first to activate it for our policyholders because since April we already had the service at no additional cost and with unlimited use”.

“We have learned a lot in this short time. The growing need to use technology to communicate with our policyholders and with those who have services has been fundamental during this pandemic period, ”said Salvador Arceo, general manager of Plan Seguro.
He explained that the company had already been preparing for a long time to digitize processes using the most modern technologies for automation, medical records, data and information processing, privacy, confidentiality and data security.
