Switch Emulator adds online support, so it loses it twice as fast in an awkward U-turn

This week, the development team behind the Switch Yuzu emulator added support for online multiplayer. However, a week later, the feature was removed from the emulator, without the developers giving any reasons.

The following message was posted on a blog about the emulator:

We are saddened to report that we have removed online support for yuzu, indefinitely and effective immediately. We apologize to our community for the confusion and disappointment surrounding this release, and especially for those who were excited to try this feature.

We’ve received valuable, in-depth feedback from our fans and members of the wider Switch and emulation communities. Truth be told, we’re all just a group of enthusiastic people from all over the world who were really excited about something we thought we could deliver. In hindsight, we understand your concerns 100%.

As always, we will continue to work on other features and improvements within Yuzu, to make it the best emulator possible. Thanks to everyone who continued to support us, provided us with feedback and were open to constructive discussions on this topic. Now, as always, we appreciate your opinions.

As you can see, no reason is given for the move, but Kotaku speculates that it could be due to the heat the emulator creators may have gotten from enabling a feature that is less about storage and homebrew and more about the fact. to avoid having to give Nintendo (or its external partners) money to enjoy Switch titles.

However, Kotaku further notes that because the online game was only available to paying Patreon supporters, Yuzu goes from being a freely distributed code to a paid service, which would place him firmly in the crosshairs of Nintendo’s legal team.

Whatever the reason, it’s a rather embarrassing change of attitude for yuzu makers.
