Musician David Stewart claims that Mikhail Gorbachev confessed to him that the “Dallas” series contributed to the collapse of the Soviet Union. The Dallas series led to the disintegration of the USSR, not social disappointment or economic collapse, Mikhail Gorbachev assured David Stewart in a conversation they had several years ago. The British musician made this revelation in singer Joss Stone’s podcast, “A Cuppa Happy”.
“The Russians saw that this is how the world lives in the United States,” said Dave Stewart, referring to the opulent lifestyle featured in the series. That largely explains the passion for waste of many of the new rich Russians, he noted.
According to Stewart, Gorbachev explained that “someone managed to introduce VHS tapes with the Dallas series into the USSR, which were broadcast illegally across much of the country,” sparking a clandestine cult for this American series and its characters, led by the charismatic JR.

In this conversation, the former president also confessed to him the impact that pop music had on the collapse of the USSR.
Gorbachev told him that in every church in the country there were antennas to block any content considered subversive. But people destroyed them in order to listen to bands like the Beatles. “My friends fell to their knees and cried when they heard the Beatles, because they had never heard anything like this before,” confessed Gorbachev.
It is not the first time that the band name Eurythmics has been associated with former president Gorbachev. In 2009, the band’s lead singer, Annie Lennox, was awarded the “Woman of Peace” award for her fight against AIDS in South Africa, in an event attended by Nobel Peace Prize winners, including Gorbachev.

In 2017, several celebrities, including Annie Lennox, joined a campaign to urge British Labor MPs to oppose the renewal of the Trident nuclear weapons program. The campaign was supported by the former Soviet president, who said the plan contradicts the spirit of the agreements that ended the Cold War.
