Stroke: Acting quickly saves brain cells

Health

Around 1,700 people suffer a stroke each year in Tyrol. On the occasion of “World Stroke Day”, the country asks to call the emergency number immediately in case of stroke symptoms and not to hesitate because of the corona pandemic. After heart attack and cancer, stroke is the third most common cause of death in Austria.

Sudden disturbances in vision and speech, paralysis, dizziness and very severe headaches can be symptoms of a stroke. In these cases, the emergency number 144 should be dialed as soon as possible, because the longer the circulatory disturbance in the brain persists, the more nerve cells die.

Every tenth person is under the age of 55

Stroke is the leading cause of physical disability in adulthood. It doesn’t just affect the elderly, every tenth stroke patient is under the age of 55. In Tyrol, the hospitals of Innsbruck, Kufstein and Lienz have their own stroke centers, so-called stroke units. All other hospitals are connected to it via the Tyrolean trail. This stroke pathway is aimed at ensuring optimal care for stroke patients, in addition to acute care, follow-up treatment, and rehabilitation.

Outpatient aftercare close to home

Since the beginning of the year, outpatient stroke care has been offered in Tyrol for post-treatment, which is carried out close to home and often also at the patient’s home. This care concept is unique in Austria and is a “special advantage” for patients and their relatives, says Arno Melitopulos-Daum, head of ÖGK’s regional office. With optimal management, 70% of patients could regain their independence, according to health councilor Bernhard Tilg (ÖVP).
