Castries, Saint Lucia: Saint Lucia has provisionally restricted the import of chickens from the UK and Europe, calling for breaks for avian flu.
The Department of Agriculture’s Veterinary and Livestock Services Division informed local traders of the measure in a letter.
The letter pointed out that the division had monitored and decided on the current situation in the event of outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in Europe and the UK in particular.
He said that as a result, a temporary restriction on the import of fresh, chilled and frozen poultry meat from the UK and Europe had been imposed with immediate effect.
The limitation also applies to the import of live birds and hatching eggs from the UK.
According to the Veterinary and Livestock Division, processed chicken stored in hermetically sealed containers and managed to destroy the HPAI virus can be imported.
But it must be accompanied by an international veterinary health certificate issued by the UK Veterinary Authority, stating that it has been treated in this way.
The Veterinary and Livestock Division says it will continue to monitor the situation and advise on any further developments.
According to the United States Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), Asian HPAI H5N1 viruses have infected the respiratory tracts of humans, causing serious illnesses such as pneumonia and respiratory failure and death in some people.
