SpaceX is ready to move on to the next stage with his Starship. The company’s largest and most powerful ship is still under construction and testing, but we have seen it take off on a few occasions. For next week he prepares for his highest flight, a total of 15 kilometers in height and then, most importantly, landing successfully. Even Elon Musk himself doesn’t have much hope that it will turn out well.
In August this year Starship carried out one of its first flight tests. Only the main body and with the unfinished ship, reached a height of about 150 meters. Now that the spacecraft is close to completion, they will test 100 times more flight.
Few possibilities, many projects
Second they announced, they are waiting perform the first high-altitude flight for the spaceship next week. There is no specific date nor 100% guarantee that they will get tested. There are many factors that come into play, from ship development to weather conditions.
Tests should be performed with the SN8 prototype. Previously, the SN6 prototype took flight and was practically just the body. This time he already has his nose up and his fins too. Tests such as these are performed to see if the spacecraft can withstand the high pressures and temperatures caused by the engines and rising in the atmosphere.
In both cases, not much chance of success. At least that asegura Elon Musk, who say success is 1/3 given the amount of things that have to go right. So next week we’ll see if the giant ship rises into the atmosphere and descends or shatters at some point in that process.
Anyway, SpaceX it also has the SS9 and SN10 prototypes ready. This is SpaceX’s strategy with Starship: have and build several prototypes in parallel to quickly test new iterations and don’t depend on a single model. This undoubtedly accelerates the development process, although it also implies a considerable consumption of financial and human resources.
The spaceship is gigantic, a ship designed for interplanetary travel. At 50 meters high and with three Raptor engines, the spacecraft is one of those chosen to take astronauts to the Moon and even Mars. Elon Musk really dreams high, hopes to place a million people on Mars by 2050 and Starship is key to that.
