Soon a mask capable of killing 90% of the Covid-19 particles

While several labs are currently trying to find an effective vaccine to fight Covid-19, other researchers are looking for more practical ways to prevent the spread of the infection. Recently, a Nottingham scientist developed a mask capable of killing the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Dr. Gareth Cave is a nanotechnology specialist at Nottingham Trent University and the type IIR mask he invented is believed to be over 90% effective in destroying the coronavirus. The outside of the mask in question is provided with a water repellent layer which can reduce the inhalation of droplets that could transmit the infection. The mask also contains copper which emits ions in direct contact with a virus. This process kills the latter.

According to the research results, the mask has a very high level of protection with a filtration capacity of up to 99.98%. On the other hand, in seven hours, it can kill over 90% of the flu and Covid-19 viruses that affect them. Thanks to its effectiveness, the new mask has been certified according to ISO 18184 standards which correspond to a test on antiviral fabrics.

More effective than surgical masks

According to Dr. Cave’s explanation, the mask they designed can make viruses inactive when they come into contact with the antiviral layer, after being blocked by the filter layers.

Unlike this new invention, conventional surgical masks have the sole purpose of “preventing the entry or exit of viruses”. In fact, if the normal masks consist of three layers, the new masks have five layers which also include an antiviral inner layer supplied with nano-copper.

“Our new antiviral mask was designed to use existing barrier technology and combine it with our nanotechnology to kill the virus once it is trapped,” Cave said. The scientist also indicated that his invention can be safely thrown away after its use is complete, because it is no longer at risk of transmitting the virus.

Soon available on the market

The new masks are manufactured and manufactured by Pharm2Farm, a spin-out company of NTU, founded by Doctor Cave himself at BioCity in Nottingham.

Mass production of the masks is scheduled to begin this November and will be available for the first time in December for health, transport and catering services.

To pre-order the masks, go directly to the Pharm2Farm website. A mask costs 1 pound at the wholesale price, but it should be noted that the value of the orders must be at least equal to 10,000 pounds.
