By 2020, the launch of the flagships is almost complete, so we are preparing the first launches in 2021. Samsung would theoretically open the ball with the Galaxy S21 in January or February later. Then I heard that OnePlus 9 Pro will arrive in March. Details about Sony’s future flagship, the Xperia 1 III, have also started to appear.
It should also be noted that one can deduce which companies are using the new Snapdragon 875 processor from the name of the CEO it attends to Qualcomm conference on December 1st. The new CPU will debut there, in the presence of the CEO of Xiaomi, but also of the representatives of OnePlus and Sony. Xiaomi will include the chipset on Mi 11 Pro and OnePlus on OnePlus 9 Pro. Sony should also give us an Xperia flagship with this CPU. It’s hard to guess when and especially how the phone will arrive, because events like CES 2021 only take place virtually and MWC 2021 has been moved from spring to late summer.
We expect the Xperia 1 III to carry like the last 2 predecessors a 4K screen, most likely a 6.5-inch OLED or maybe even jumping to 6.7 and 6.9 inches. We probably did too 120 Hz refresh rate and HDR support, but also Gorilla Glass 6 or Victus protection. Sony could finally go from 8GB of RAM to 12GB and give us 256GB of storage on the base version. It will be interesting to see if it gives us another physical side button, as we have seen on the Xperia 5 II.
It should also evolve beyond the 8MP selfie camera, at a higher resolution and provide us with new photo sensors in the case of the triple or quad rear camera. Android 11 will be pre-installed and I expect front stereo speakers too, bundled with the dynamic vibration system. We can also hope a bigger battery, maybe 4500 or 5000mAh and to load faster. That design I can’t imagine giving up on the elongated, angular format.
