The year is 2024. The United States has been on lockdown for four years. The coronavirus has now cost over 100 million lives and has mutated. Covid-23 not only attacks the lungs, but also the brain. Anyone showing even the slightest sign of infection is immediately taken to a quarantine camp, where death usually awaits.
It is a sombre image that «Songbird» shows. The new work from blockbuster producer Michael Bay (55, “Transformers”) is heralded as the first film about the Corona crisis. But optimism is sought in vain. “Songbird” is a real science fiction horror.
“How tasteless can you be?”
The fact that the film is not only inspired by the Crown crisis, but that the deadly virus is actually called Covid-23 in the film, is met with misunderstanding in many places. The first trailer, which appeared last week, is teeming with negative comments.
“How tasteless can you be?” Asks one user. “It’s like Hollywood made a 9/11 movie while the towers were still collapsing,” says another. Positive comments cannot be found even after a long scroll.
Hollywood star at “Songbird”
“Pearl Harbor” director Michael Bay is only on board as a producer on the project. Directed by newcomer Adam Mason (45). So far he has only made a few small horror films. The fact that Hollywood stars like Demi Moore (57) or Peter Stomare (67) are now on “Songbird” is something he owes to heavyweight Bay.
Filming for the controversial film began in July when Los Angeles loosened Corona requirements and allowed film productions again. According to the filmmakers, the distance rules were strictly adhered to during filming. Most of the actors were left alone in front of the camera.
When “Songbird” will appear has not yet been determined. The fact that a trailer appears so soon after filming, however, suggests that Bay probably wants to bring the film to theaters or streaming platforms as soon as possible. (klm)
