According to a report from the Next Web published on August 28, several cryptocurrency mining apps remain in the Google Play Store despite the ban.
On July 27th, Google banned encryption apps from its Play Store. An update to Google's developer policy said that "we do not allow apps that reduce cryptocurrency on devices". The company has granted developers of the mining apps a 30-day trial period to review their products in order to meet the new terms.
The deferral period has passed, but some apps that enable mining on the device are still available on the Play Store, according to the Next Web. The site has found eight apps, three of which have been removed. NeoNeonMiner, Crypto Miner PRO, Pickaxe Miner and Pocket Miner are still live on the store, while Bitcoin Miner claims that its offer complies with the terms introduced by Google.
While MinerGate was removed from the store, its developers told Hard Fork that the latest iteration of the app has eliminated its device mining capabilities to comply with Google's rules. MinerGate told Hard Fork in an email:
"The mining business on your phone was among the key features of the MinerGate app before the latest Google Play Development policy changes." With the latest update, we are removing this functionality to meet the requirements updated. "
Earlier this month, the Google Play Store hosted an Ethereum (ETH) scam application. Lukas Stefanko, a malware researcher from Slovakia, found a "Ethereum" fraudulent app on Google Play that had been offered for purchase at a price of € 335 or about $ 388. According to the researcher, the scam intended to deceive uninformed buyers into the app purchase, which traded them for the original Ethereum cryptocurrency.
In April, Google also announced that it is removing mining extensions from its Chrome Web Store after "90 percent" did not comply with its rules. Reportedly, the move came in response to the malicious "cryptojacking" analysis in the extensions.
