Billy Corrigan and the rest of Smashing Pumpkins recently premiered two new singles, “Dulcet in E” and “Purple Blood, this one via THEPRP. The legendary alternative group is set to release their new double album CYR next week, the November 27, from which these two new singles will be extracted.
From the announcement of the next album, the road to Cyr it was a scenic one. The band’s steady stream of distributed singles colored much of the project before its release. Singles land in pairs, but the choices are almost always a dichotomy of sound. First there was the dance-influenced title track “Cyr” paired with Color of Love. “In September the electronic tracks” Confessions of a Dopamine Addict “and” Wrath “were discarded. In October,” Anno Satana “and” Birch Grove “were the new double singles, closely followed with Halloween invoking” Wyttch “and the less disturbing “Ramona”.
Now the ears are on the alert for the new singles duo. “Dulcet in E” is a full-bodied melody that is as tender and welcoming instrumentally as it is lyrically. The song boasts a catchy pop core, Corrigan sings “It’s too hard for solid knowledge / Too easy, the blindfold / I’m never more than you might want.”
“Purple Blood”, on the other hand, is irrevocably The Smashing Pumpkins. It has a classic feel because it hinges on beautiful layered guitars, a technique that gave the band so much of their sonic identity. But in addition there is a great synthesizer accompaniment here, and a nervous, nervous shiver towards its end, which solemnly leaves Corrigan alone with an acoustic guitar.
Cyr will be the second LP after Corrigan’s reunion with guitarist James Iha and drummer Jimmy Chamberlain. Their initial homecoming was 2018 Shiny and Oh So Bright, Vol. 1 / LP: No past. Without a future. Without sun. Just last week, the band premiered the music video directed by Charlotte Kemp Muhl for “Wyttch”.
