This December 1st is World AIDS Day. Launched in 1988 by the World Health Organization, the operation is organized every year in support of people living with HIV. For this 2020 edition, in the midst of the global Covid-19 pandemic, RTC took a closer look at the work of Liege’s Sida Sol prevention center.
HIV, three letters to determine the virus responsible for AIDS, an epidemic that has lasted for 37 years. In Liège, the AIDS prevention center Sol is raising public awareness of this global scourge which, according to the latest report by the Belgian health institute Sciensano in 2018, affected 16,673 people in Belgium.
The treatments are proceeding but no vaccine on the horizon, HIV is constantly mutating, unlike the coronavirus. In this context, the other decisive aspect in terms of prevention is the screening service (blood, urine or smear) offered by Sida Sol.
With the Covid-19 pandemic, to test itself, Sida Sol has set up a system of appointments, online on its website sidasol.be, or by telephone (04/270 31 90). The prevention center also offers mobile screening using easily transportable equipment.

Condom use and regular screening, especially when you have different partners, are the best protections.
Given the health crisis, Sida Sol canceled her usual action on the ground on this World AIDS Day but found an alternative to affirm her support for the cause. The prevention center has launched the challenge of simply posting a photo with a red bow on Instagram or Facebook with the #sidasol.
