Seydou Doumbia, how are you?
Seydou Doumbia: I am fine thanks. I’m in Dubai for a few days of vacation. Otherwise, I’m training to stay fit. I want to sign with an ambitious club again in January. I will be ready and motivated.
Your younger brother recently made his big debut with FC Zurich. Did you congratulate him?
Clear. Ousmane and I talk almost every day. I really like giving him the change. He is finally allowed to play in the top flight, in my eyes he would have deserved it for a long time. I am very happy for him and I am convinced that he will help FCZ.
As a YB legend and former FCB star, do you now sympathize with Zurich?
What does it mean to sympathize? Since my brother changed, I’ve obviously been an FCZ fan!
Is Ousmane more on the defensive because he always had to take the ball off you as a boy?
No. (laughs). As children, we hardly played football together. He’s five years younger than me. And by the time he reached an interesting and competitive age, I was already far from home.
Your former clubs YB and Basel will also meet on Saturday …
… Please don’t ask me now who I’ll keep my fingers crossed for!
But. Who do you keep your fingers crossed for?
It’s unfair. YB is forever in my heart. I had the chance to launch my career in Bern, where I lived two unforgettable seasons. Individually, it went very well for me. Unfortunately we were unable to win a title as a team. But I will never forget FC Basel either. I had a great year there. At the FCB I was finally able to celebrate a title. We took double. I wish both teams the best.
And who will win the blow?
So I imagine a spectacular 2: 2 or 1: 1. That would be fine for me.
With one or two goals from Jean-Pierre Nsame? Were you really disappointed when he broke your record of 30 goals this season last season?
He scored 32 goals, right? But I was not disappointed, no. I like to give him this record and I’m happy for him. He is a good guy and a very strong physically strong forward.
You can also rest assured. You’ve been the Super League top scorer three times.
Yes (laughs). And two more times in Russia.
You haven’t played in months. Are you still a clipper?
Clear. I’m sure I still have a lot of goals under my belt.
Can you imagine going back to Switzerland again?
For sure. I really like Switzerland. The quality of life is great, people are super nice. I am always very happy to help.
Maybe with your brother at the FCZ?
Why not? I’ve never played with Ousmane before. I would definitely like that. Let’s see what happens in January. But one thing is certain: I will never return to FC Sion again. Never, never again! Absolutely not.
Are you still disappointed with President Christian Constantin?
What do you think I am still very, very angry with him. The Sion fans were great. Teammates too. But the president is crazy.
Can you tell us your point of view?
First he put pressure on us and then he released us without warning. The biggest disappointment for me was that he later portrayed us as greedy in public. As I said: I’m still very angry. But I don’t really want to talk about Zion anymore.
Your brother plays in Valais on Sunday.
As I said: I’m a fan of FCZ!
Seydou Doumbia from the Ivorian arrives at YB from Japan in the summer of 2008, at the age of 20. In his first season he is just a wild card. But since the fast man with the unusual hairstyle usually scores goals immediately after being replaced, he immediately becomes the crowd favorite. Based on “Kumbaya my Lord”, YB fans sing “Doumbia my Lord”. Despite the role of wild card, he even became the top scorer with 20 goals. In the following season, “Lord” Doumbia hits 30 times and is obviously the top scorer again. The one thing missing from the two-year romance between the cheerful striker and YB is a title. Six years after his move to CSKA Moscow (he twice won the title of Russia’s top scorer), he was loaned to FC Basel by AS Roma. With the FCB he won the championship and the cup and was again the top scorer. As FCB and AS Roma disagree financially, Doumbia is gone after one season. The third guest performance in Switzerland will take place in September 2019. But Sion is a big disappointment for the 37-time player of the Ivory Coast national team. After 5 goals in 15 missions, Sion boss Christian Constantin gives him and the other players unannounced warning in March during the Corona lockdown. They shouldn’t have given up the money, CC says. Since then, the 75-time Super League scorer has been left without a club.
