The world champions of France and the European champions of Portugal have already been determined as opponents of the German group at EM 2021. In the final of the playoffs, Hungary and Iceland have a tough battle. The other games are also competitive and there are surprises.

The Hungarian national football team is the third German opponent in next year’s EM preliminary round. The two-time vice world champion qualified for a European championship for the fourth time with a dramatic 2: 1 (0: 1) in the play-off against Iceland. Due to a mistake by Leipzig goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi from a free-kick by Gylfi Sigurdsson (11th), Hungary remained behind. But two late goals from Loic Nego (88th) and Dominik Szoboszlai (90th + 2) still secured the EM ticket.

In Group F, Hungary will be the German side’s last opponent in the preliminary round on 23 June in Munich. Before that, the team around goalkeeper Gulacsi will face defending champions Portugal and world champions France.

North Macedonia, which qualified for the European Championships for the first time, wrote the history of football. In the final of the football dwarves, the number 65 of the world rankings won 1-0 (0-0) against Georgia in Tbilisi. Old star Goran Pandev (37) of Italian first division club FC Genoa scored the winning goal (56th), which ensured the participation of the “Red Lions” for the first time in a major tournament. North Macedonia will play in Group C against the Netherlands, Ukraine and Austria at EURO (11 June to 11 July 2021).

The Scots play together

North Macedonia qualified for an EM for the first time. In Tbilisi against guest Georgia, Goran Pandev scored the only goal in the 56th minute in front of the empty stands for the 1-0 (0-0). The 37-year-old, who has been playing in Italy almost without exception for 19 years, is Macedonia’s record holder and top scorer. For the CFC Genoa striker it was the 36th goal in the 114th international match. Ukraine, the Netherlands and Austria are the opponents.

Scotland, which will host the Glasgow European Championship in 2021, beat Serbia 5-4 on penalties in Belgrade. Goalkeeper David Marshall became the winner of the match and saved Alexandar Mitrovic’s last penalty. Now it’s up to the Scots against England, Croatia and the Czech Republic.

Slovaks with Bundesliga players Peter Pekarik (Hertha BSC) and Ondrej Duda (1. FC Köln) won 2: 1 (1: 1, 1: 0) after extra time in Northern Ireland and met Spain in the group E, Sweden and Poland. Juraj Kucka (17th) and Michal Duris (110th) secured the victory.
