The mysterious disease that afflicts hundreds of fishermen from different regions of Senegal seems to have an explanation, which would not be toxic, still far from viral. What could be the cause? The details.
A mysterious disease has appeared in recent days among the fishermen of Thiaroye-sur-Mer, a suburb of Dakar, and has spread to other places in Senegal, triggering panic in all the fishing villages. While hundreds, even a thousand people suffer from attacks, especially cutaneous, related to the disease, the health authorities reassure, indicating that the source is not viral.
While the specialists evoke a toxic origin, asking that the research be directed towards the fishermen’s nets, a Senegalese doctor seems to have unraveled the mystery of this … mysterious disease. From the white coat hanging from the online newspaper Seneweb, fishermen are said to suffer from chickenpox.
“Chickenpox is a contagious disease caused by the chickenpox virus. You take it only once in your life, after which you acquire immunity … Its contamination is very rapid. That is why in fishing villages where there is great promiscuity, it may seem logical that the disease affects so many people in such a short time, ”the white coat said.
“The treatment is only symptomatic with antiseptics to wash off and also antihistamines to stop the itching. Sometimes, antibiotics may be added to avoid bacterial superinfection. This treatment pays off two or even three weeks later, ”the doctor continues.
“Chickenpox in children is less severe than in adults. That is to say, the longer we put off having chickenpox, the more likely we will have chickenpox quite severe like the one we are currently seeing in these young adult anglers. We should isolate them, give them symptomatic treatment and wait for a spontaneous recovery… ”, he concludes.
Note that this mysterious disease spread very quickly among the fishermen of Thiaroye-sur-mer. Out of sixty cases, about two hundred people were affected in less than forty-eight hours, prompting health authorities to deploy huge means to try to contain the disease. Serious cases were resolved quickly.
