In 1995, Sega released Genesis Nomad in North America. The 16-bit notebook was a console with an LCD screen and could play Genesis cartridges. In a recent youtube clip, Hiroyuki Miyazaki of Sega showed the hardware prototype for the first time.
Here is the final version of Nomad’s product. The design is in tune with the home console, which makes sense since it’s literally a portable Genesis.
Nomad could also connect to TVs for big-screen action, a first for the time.
The prototype looked different and, in my opinion, much better. Note that the hardware is written with the name “Venus”, which was the code name.
While Sega hoped to overcome Nintendo’s dominance with Nomad, the 16-bit laptop ultimately failed and was discontinued in 1999.Brian Ashcraft
