SC Bern returns to the ice after ten days of quarantine. Don Nachbaur, however, no longer leads the first training session. The 61-year-old retired after just 169 days in office. Despite a 2 year contract.
U20 manager Mario Kogler takes over from the 61-year-old. Together with former assistant Alex Reinhard (46) and sporting director Alex Chatelain (42), deposed in the spring and responsible for the strategic development of the club. Additionally, former NHL star Mark Streit, who is a shareholder on SCB’s board of directors, will support the new team of coaches.
Kogler is only 33 years old and comes from Klagenfurt. In 2013 he joined HC Thurgau as an assistant coach. Following the voluntary departure of coach Christian Weber, Kogler assumed the gang’s senior position in Eastern Switzerland in 2016, led them to the playoffs and brought qualifiers winner Rapperswil-Jona to the brink of elimination.
After a year as John Fust’s assistant in Visp, Kogler moved in 2017 as a U20 manager at SCB, where he was once disqualified because he went to Bob Mongrain in Kloten.
New SCB coach Don Nachbaur: That’s why Schelling decided not to name(02:18)
Nachbaur comes before the firing
This is the third time that the SCB has changed managers this year. In January, Kari Jalonen had to leave in three and a half years despite two championship titles. Then Hans Kossmann was no longer hired after missing the playoffs. And now Nachbaur, whose election has already raised eyebrows, is ahead of his sacking.
Even before the start of the season there were doubts about the choice of the coach in Bern. “A lot is handled differently here than Don sa from North America,” said sports director Florence Schelling, who with the Austro-Canadian compiled a catalog of 60 question criteria in VIEW. “The point now is to give him time to acclimate and establish himself.”
Now the time is up …
The SCB has taken many austerity measures due to the crown situation and will continue to do so, the club writes in a message. “But precisely because this season requires a lot of courtesy from our customers and fans and we feel a great solidarity, we feel obliged to show them at least a decent sporting figure”.
