SC extends multivaccination and polio vaccination campaigns until 13 November

Santa Catarina has decided to extend the multivaccination and polio vaccination campaigns for another two weeks. A further opportunity for parents and guardians to bring children and adolescents under the age of 15 to update their vaccination records. With the extension, the campaigns will last until November 13 in all 295 municipalities of Santa Catarina.

In the first three weeks of the Campaign, between 5 and 23 October, 168,825,000 children aged 1 to less than 5 were vaccinated against polio, from a target of 342,825 children, or about half of the population. total number of children who should have been vaccinated.

Lia Quaresma Coimbra, head of immunization of the Directorate of Epidemiological Surveillance of Santa Catarina (Dive), warns that low vaccination coverage is a risk for everyone. “The vaccine is still the safest and most effective way to prevent numerous diseases. Through the vaccine we have already been able to eliminate diseases such as polio, measles from the state and we do not want them to return, which is why it is important to keep the vaccination dossier updated ”, he stresses.

Brazil has not detected cases of poliomyelitis (infantile paralysis) since 1990 and in 1994 received from the Pan-American Health Organization (OPS) the Free Area Certification for the circulation of wild poliovirus in its territory. In Santa Catarina, the last records of the disease date back to 1989.

The multivaccination campaign is for children and adolescents

The updating of the vaccination booklet for children and adolescents under 15 also continues until 13 November. In this case, there is no specific numerical goal. The main objective is to be able to help children and young people who, for some reason, have not taken the doses indicated in the Basic Vaccine Calendar and, consequently, to increase vaccination coverage, decrease the incidence of vaccine-preventable diseases and contribute to the control, elimination and / or eradication of these diseases.
