Samsung will discontinue the Galaxy Note series in 2021, according to Reuters. However, it will add stylus support to the Galaxy S and Z Fold 2021.
The company appears to be facing a decline in demand for expensive smartphones due to the pandemic. Instead, it will focus on its range of Galaxy S phones. Samsung’s foldable smartphones will replace the Galaxy Note as premium Samsung devices. These will be complemented by the optional stylus accessory.
In a world of giant smartphones, Notes no longer stands out?
The notion that Samsung stops selling the Galaxy Note series in favor of Galaxy S models is not unfounded. In previous years, the two smartphone series were distinct:
– Galaxy S models were smaller and more common devices,
– The Note series was more like a tablet.
The Note series was completed with a stylus accessory that helped it stand out.
But the Note series success in popularizing large-screen phones turned out to be the reason for the series cancellation. When the Galaxy Note was introduced, its huge 5.3-inch display ranked it above other phones. But as of 2020, phones like the Galaxy S20 Ultra and Galaxy Note 20 Ultra actually compete for the same audience. Furthermore, the two series have increasingly similar specifications, screen sizes and features.
In an era where Samsung is already developing and rolling out cheaper smartphones in just a few months, it’s hard to justify the existence of two flagship series. Recall the Galaxy S20 FE, which was launched earlier this year to directly meet consumer demand for a low-cost mid-range phone, but one that offers some of Samsung’s premium features.
This is especially true when the only real aspect that highlights the Note series today is the pen. In fact, the S Pen is the accessory Samsung appears to be adding to the standard Galaxy S series starting in 2021.

Another reason to remove the Note series is that it’s not that special anymore. In previous years, Samsung has used Notes to experiment with some of its new innovations and design changes. For example, the Note series helped popularize the edge display and introduced an IR blaster. It also removed the microSD card slot and brought several generations of Galaxy hardware design.
Even so, its role as Samsung’s futuristic test platform has been completely usurped by foldable phones like the Galaxy Z Fold. They promise significantly larger screens than the traditional Galaxy S and Note range. If we add a stylus – which Samsung intends to offer as an optional accessory – The Z Fold series is a perfect successor to the Note series.
