During an online event in Shanghai, China, the Samsung presented the Exynos 1080 chipset. The video was posted on Youtube and featured no technical information, but it tries to fuel the hype for the new chipset. It’s a new 5G chipset for some Galaxy devices outside the main spectrum.
Samsung needs a capable 5G chipset on its mid-range or premium mid-range phones if it prefers. The new chipset will power Samsung’s next generation of FlagShip 5G smartphones and likely other phones from other manufacturers. Samsung wants other companies to adopt its Exynos chipset solution. The chipset has a built-in 5G modem, and Samsung says this chipset will be sufficient for “innovative” downlink speeds of up to 5.1Gbps on networks below 6Ghz.
As everything revolves around “AI” today, the company introduces a Neural Processing Unit (NPU) in this chipset to enhance its AI capabilities.
According to the information, the NPU can offer up to 5.7 TOP of performance, providing a huge increase in the AI capabilities of devices powered by Exynos 1080.
A powerful 5nm architecture with Cortex-A78 core
The promotional video highlights the Exynos 1080 SoC as one of the first chipsets to receive the new Cortex-A78 CPU cores from ARM. The phone is equipped with a Cortex-A78 core which operates at 2.8 GHz. It also has three other Cortex-A78 cores at 2.6 GHz. In this architecture, Samsung can adjust the cores individually.

Last but not least, the chipset features four low-power Cortex-A55 cores operating at 2.0 GHz. The SoC supports the latest generation LPDDR5 RAM standard and UFS 3.1 storage. It is also a capable gaming chipset thanks to the use of a Mali-G78 MP10 GPU.
The chipset is equipped with HDR10 + and supports screens with a refresh rate of up to 144 Hz in Full HD + resolution.
When it comes to the camera department, the device supports camera sensors up to 200MP. The Exynos 1080 will be ready as soon as Samsung has a sensor with this capability. It also comes with HDR10 + video recording in 4K UHD.
Interestingly, this chipset is the first Samsung processor designed and manufactured in an EUF-based 5nm FinFET process. It achieves massive energy savings (power and heat), but increases performance beyond the 7nm standard.
According to available information, the Exynos 1080 will make its major debut early next year on a smartphone from Chinese manufacturer Vivo. The anti-Exynos crowd will have to contend with the fact that Samsung’s chipset division appears to be alive and cornering.
