Samsung Display recently obtained a license from the US Department of Commerce to sell OLED panels to Huawei. Last month, the South Korean screen maker had to stop supplying Huawei due to US sanctions against the Chinese tech giant.
The sanctions were an extension of the restrictions announced in August, which prohibited Huawei from buying chips made by foreign manufacturers using US technology. Samsung panels were therefore included among these restrictions because they use circuits made with US technology. Samsung Display applied for a license to sell OLED screens to Huawei before the sanctions went into effect. Despite this, not all Samsung Display OLED products have been approved.
The company is the first South Korean company to obtain a license from the US government. LG display has applied for a license in the past, but without success. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, which have stopped supplying semiconductors to Huawei, will also require approval. However, the other companies have not yet received US approval.
According to informed people, the fundamental function of the sanctions was to prevent Huawei from purchasing memory chips. With several screen manufacturers operating around the world, a strict export ban on OLED panels was not necessary to put pressure on the Chinese company.
Intel allegedly received a license from the US government last month to continue supplying certain products to Huawei. Samsung Display declined to comment on the matter and Huawei has labeled the sanctions as “continued aggression” by the US and said it will continue to invest in new technologies despite them.
